What happens to my groups if my Organizer subscription expires or if I cancel my subscription?

All organizer subscriptions (Starter, Standard, and Pro) automatically renew, but your subscription may expire for two reasons:

  1. You decide to cancel the auto-renewal

  2. The credit card on file for your subscription has been declined, or there is an issue with the payment that can't be solved by our automatic retries

Below, you'll find the answers to the most common questions and doubts surrounding this topic.

What happens to my account once I no longer have an active Organizer subscription?

If either of the above happens, your subscription will stay active until its scheduled expiration date.

After that moment, your organizer account will enter a two-week grace period, during which you can always update your payment details to keep your subscription from expiring. If the subscription expires, you'll no longer be an organizer on Meetup, and your account will be downgraded to become a non-paid member instead. However, you can start a new subscription at any time to become an organizer again.

What happens to my groups once I no longer have an active Organizer subscription?

If you cancel your subscription or if the payment fails several times until your subscription expires, it will enter a 15-day grace period at the end of your billing cycle. During this grace period, you can either reprocess your payment to keep your subscription active or step down and nominate a new organizer

When your grace period ends, you'll automatically be stepped down as the organizer of your groups.

If no new organizer takes over the group based on a nomination from you, at the end of your grace period, we’ll notify your group's leadership members of your departure and invite them to step up as the new organizer. After that, we’ll extend the invitation to all group members. Your group will stay active under its new organizer or, if no one volunteers, it will automatically close within 15 days after the end of your grace period. You can also choose to step down or close your group permanently.

❗️Closing a group is a permanent decision. Once your groups are shut down, they can no longer be found on the platform, and they can't be revived or reinstated on our side. However, you're always welcome to create a new group if you start a new subscription.

I have started a Free trial for a Pro Organizer subscription. What happens if I cancel my subscription during my Free trial period?

If you cancel during your Meetup Pro trial period, we will not charge you for your Meetup Pro subscription.

What happens if I want to cancel my subscription after the Meetup Pro Free trial period?

If your trial is coming to an end and you would like to cancel your Meetup Pro subscription, you must complete the cancellation process at least one (1) day before the start of your next billing cycle to prevent automatic renewal of your Meetup Pro subscription for the following month. You will still have access to a group’s information through the end of the current cycle.

If I am on a Pro Organizer subscription, can I decrease the number of groups in my network without canceling the subscription?

If you would like to decrease the number of groups in your network, you must close the unwanted group at least one (1) day before the start of your next billing cycle to prevent an automatic charge for the previous number of groups for the following month. If you do not want to permanently close them, we suggest stepping down and leaving them open for others to step in or transferring them to another organizer.

If you are decreasing the number of groups in your subscription, the remaining groups will not be affected.
