❗️The procedure below permanently removes your groups from Meetup without canceling any ongoing Organizer Subscription you may have.

If you're looking to delete and erase all of your data from Meetup instead, please refer to the dedicated article Organizer account deletion requests.

If you no longer wish to keep a Meetup group active, you can close, delete, cancel, or remove your group at any time. Whether you created it accidentally, it’s a duplicate, or you’re simply ready to move on, the steps below explain how to permanently delete or close your group.

When you close (delete) a group, it is permanently removed from Meetup. Members will no longer be able to access photos, discussions, events, or the member list. Closed groups cannot be reopened later (see: Can I reopen a closed Meetup Group?) and Customer Support cannot restore the details that were removed from the platform.

Because closing a group permanently deletes it, we recommend considering stepping down instead. If you step down as organizer, your community can continue to exist. You can nominate a new organizer or let Meetup invite members to take over.

If you're sure you want to permanently cancel one or more of your groups, you can follow these steps to close and delete them:

  1. Log in to the Meetup account you use to manage your group (❗️only the primary organizer of a group can close it! If you are a co-organizer or event host, you won't have the option to close a group).

  2. Start by letting your members know you intend to close the group so everyone has time to save any photos or contact other members.

  3. In your Meetup account, open the group you’d like to close.

  4. Click on Manage Group, then on

    a. Standard and Starter organizers: Transfer group ownership or

    b. Pro organizers: Close group as last option

  5. Choose whether to transfer the group to another member who could step up as the new organizer, or click on Do you want to close your group instead. in the top-left corner of the transferring page.

👉 If you are a Pro organizer, you might not find an option to transfer your group to someone else, but only to close it. If you'd like to transfer ownership of your group instead, contact our Customer Support to complete the operation for you.

  6. Follow the further group cancellation questions and steps.

  7. At the end of the whole process, click on Close group permanently.

  8. As soon as the flow has ended, you’ll see a green banner confirming the cancellation of your group.

Will I stop being charged once I close all the groups I organize?

No, recurring subscription charges will continue as before even once you close and cancel all the groups you have. This is to ensure continuity and let you open new groups within the same subscription even after you've closed some of them.

If you do not wish to lead any Meetup groups and would like to stop your experience as an organizer entirely, you will also need to manually cancel your subscription to ensure you are no longer charged. To do that, follow the steps listed in the article Canceling a recurring subscription.
