At Meetup, we use a personalized recommendation model to suggest new events and groups to members based on their personal preferences and past activity. This allows members to easily discover new events and groups that align with their unique needs, and organizers can reliably reach the members who are most likely to attend their events.
Our personalized model considers the following key factors when compiling recommendations on Meetup:
- Event and group location: How close the event or group is to the member.
- Timing: How soon the event is based on the dates the member has specified.
- Event and group popularity: How many RSVPs and participants the events and/or group have already attracted.
- Topic alignment: How much the event’s stated focus mirrors the member’s stated interests.
- Keyword alignment: How much the event or group name and description match the user's search request.
Furthermore, we temporarily boost the visibility of new small groups (created in the last 60 days and with fewer than 50 members) and their events. We do this to ensure that new groups can gain traction quickly and get off to a successful start.
If you believe your events are not displaying properly, we encourage you to implement the following best practices to boost the chances that your event is properly cataloged by our model:
- Craft keyword-rich descriptions. When creating event or group descriptions, include all the terms members might search for. A detailed, keyword-packed description helps your events and groups appear in more recommendations.
- Tag relevant event topics. During event creation, select topics that accurately reflect the event’s themes and interests. These topics directly influence how the model aligns your event with potential attendees.
- Set the ideal time and location. Schedule events well in advance (we recommend a few weeks ahead) to give members plenty of time to discover and RSVP. For physical events, make sure the location is as accurate as possible.
- Keep your group(s) active. Schedule events regularly, post updates, and engage members in Group Discussions to improve your events’ overall visibility and RSVPs.
If you still feel that your events are not being displayed correctly, please contact our team via the Support form with more information about what you're experiencing!
