Why do I always see "There was an error when logging in — please try again"?

If you’re seeing the message "There was an error when logging in — please try again" when you try to sign in from the Meetup website, it may be caused by certain browser extensions interfering with the login process.

We have recently made updates to improve the functionality of our login system across various browser setups and environments. However, in some cases, extensions — especially ad-blockers — can still interfere with the connection between your browser and Meetup.

Why this happens

Some browser extensions monitor or modify the information sent between websites and your browser. When this happens during login, it can cause the process to stop midway, which triggers the generic error message.

Even if you try an incognito window, many extensions can be enabled in incognito mode as well — so the issue may persist unless the extension is turned off.

What you can try

To fix the issue:

  1. Check your browser extensions
Look for ad-blockers, privacy tools, tracking prevention, or similar extensions.

  2. Temporarily disable them for meetup.com
This usually restores a clean connection and allows the login to work normally.

  3. Try logging in again
Once the extension is turned off (or paused for our site), the error should disappear.

Still having trouble?

If the error continues, feel free to contact us and let us know:

  • Which browser you're using

  • Which extensions you have installed

  • Whether disabling them changed anything

We’ll be happy to help you get signed in.
