Deactivating an account

Deactivating an account is a permanent action and cannot be undone. Once your account is deactivated, it cannot be reinstated. If you decide to join Meetup again in the future, you’ll need to create a new account.

Accidental account deletion

If you had more than one account and deactivated the wrong one, it cannot be restored. Removed accounts cannot be reactivated. To keep using Meetup, you’ll need to create a new account and rejoin your groups.

To prevent this, double-check that you’re signed into the correct account before closing it.

Will I get a confirmation after deactivation?

You will not receive a confirmation email when your account is closed.
👉 If you see the final confirmation screen after clicking Submit, your account has been deactivated successfully.

Will my payments be canceled?

Yes, once you deactivate your account, any subscription you still have active on Meetup (as organizer, or linked to recurring dues you're paying to be part of a group) will automatically be canceled.

❗ Exception: If you subscribed through Apple or Google, you must cancel directly through Apple or Google before deactivating. Meetup cannot stop those payments.

How to deactivate your account (web)

  1. Go to your Settings page

  2. Select Account Management from the left menu

  3. Scroll down and click Deactivate your account

  4. If you’re an organizer with active groups, step down as the organizer of your groups or close your groups

  5. Enter your password (reset it if needed via your Settings page email)

  6. Click Submit

👉 After this, your account is permanently closed. No confirmation email is sent.

Accounts created with Facebook, Google, or Apple

If you created your account using Facebook, Google, or Apple, you’ll need to create a Meetup password first before deactivation:

  • Go to the password reset page

  • Enter the email linked to your Facebook, Google, or Apple account

  • Follow the instructions in the reset email to create a password

  • Once your password is set, follow the steps above to deactivate

Apple ID accounts:

  • Copy the auto-generated email listed in your Profile

  • Use that email on the password reset page

  • Follow the instructions to set a password, then deactivate as above
