How we moderate Meetup to keep interactions meaningful and safe

Meetup helps people connect through shared interests and experiences. To support meaningful interactions and maintain a positive, safe experience across the platform, we moderate content and activity through both automated systems and human review, in line with our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.

For clarity, we use the following definitions:

  • Content: Anything shared on Meetup, such as messages, posts, comments, event descriptions, or other material created by organizers and members.

  • Activity: How the platform is being used, including what is shared and how members and organizers interact with others and with Meetup features.

Our moderation principles

Our moderation efforts are guided by the following core principles:

  • Member experience first: Content and activity should support genuine participation and positive interactions.

  • Consistency: Comparable behavior is handled the same way across the platform.

  • Timely intervention: Impermissible activity is addressed as soon as possible.

  • Room for review: Some cases may require additional review when more context is needed.

By applying these principles, we aim to address misuse on Meetup while being careful not to restrict legitimate participation and engagement.

How content moderation works

We use a combination of automated systems and human review to moderate activity and content on Meetup.

  • Automated systems identify patterns, as well as individual instances of content or activity that violate our policies, that may affect platform quality or safety, allowing us to respond efficiently as the platform grows.

  • Human review helps ensure that actions taken on flagged content or activity are appropriate and consistent with our policies.

This allows us to act efficiently while maintaining appropriate oversight.

When content or accounts may be restricted or removed

If content or activity violates our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines, we may restrict or remove the content, or suspend or terminate the account.

Violations include activities that disrupt the community experience, misuse Meetup’s features, or otherwise are inconsistent with the platform's purpose, such as content or activities that appear primarily promotional, repetitive, or disconnected from genuine connection and participation on Meetup.

Any content or account moderation action taken in response to a violation is intended to protect the community and support meaningful engagement—not to discourage legitimate use.

For more information, please review:

If your content or account is restricted or removed

If you believe a restriction was applied in error, you can contact Support to request a review, or if you are located in the European Union and disagree with a statement of reasons provided by Meetup, you should follow the appeals process described on the Meetup Digital Services Act page.

Our commitment to the community

We monitor and moderate content and activity to help maintain Meetup as a trusted space for genuine connections. Through a layered moderation approach that combines automated systems with human review, we work to ensure a safe, respectful, and positive experience for everyone on the platform.
