Because Meetup is designed around communities, all events must be associated with a group and can't exist by themselves outside of a group. Groups form the foundation of these communities, while events bring members together around shared interests: therefore, events can't be created outside of groups for now.
Below, we explain what your options are for creating events depending on your organizer plan.
What Happens If I Try to Create an Event Without a Group?
If you attempt to create an event, Meetup will automatically attach it to one of your existing groups. If you only have one group, all new events will default to that group.
How Many Groups You Can Create Depends on Your Plan
Starter Organizer Plan
The Starter plan includes one group only, so all events must be tied to that single group. The Starter plan also poses a limit to the number of events you can create in a given period. For more information, make sure you read our article Meetup Starter: The Complete Guide for First‑Time Organizers.
Standard Organizer Plan
The Standard Organizer plan allows you to create up to three groups, giving you more flexibility. You can:
Create multiple communities for different interests.
Post events within each group separately.
Pro Organizer Plan
The Pro Organizer plan is designed for organizations that manage multiple communities at scale. With Pro, you can:
- Create and manage a larger number of groups (well beyond the limits of Standard).
- Use advanced tools including analytics, promotional features, and centralized management.
- Organize events across many groups with more control and efficiency.
If you want to host events for different audiences, upgrading your plan may give you the flexibility you need.
Tips for Organizing Events Across Groups
Create a group that clearly reflects the type of event or community you want to build.
If your events span different topics, consider creating separate groups under the Standard or Pro plan.
Review your organizer plan to ensure it supports the number of groups you want.
