Why was I charged by a Meetup group? How to stop charges or request a refund

Some Meetup organizers charge member dues for joining or staying in their groups. These fees are set and managed entirely by the organizer, not by Meetup.

If you see a charge from a Meetup group, even a small one like $3, here’s why it may have happened and how you can stop future charges or request a refund.

🔍 Why did I get charged by a Meetup group?

You may see a charge from a group if all of the following are true:

  • You have a payment method saved in your Meetup account

  • You are (or were recently) a member of the group

  • The group’s organizer has recurring dues set for members

These charges are processed automatically through the payment method saved in your profile. Meetup will never charge you unless a payment method is registered and the group organizer has enabled dues.

🚫 How do I stop being charged by a group?

If you don’t want to continue paying dues, you can stop future charges by leaving the group:

  1. Log in to your Meetup account

  2. Go to the homepage of the group you want to leave

  3. Click or tap Leave Group

👉 Once you leave a group, you will not be charged again.

🔁 What if I rejoin later?

If you rejoin during a billing cycle for which you have already paid, you will not be charged again until the next billing cycle.

💸 Can I get a refund for a charge from a group?

Refunds for member dues are handled directly by the group organizer, not Meetup. Each organizer may have their own policy.

If you wish to request a refund for a recent or unexpected charge, please contact the group organizer.

🛟 I couldn’t get a refund from the organizer. Can Meetup help?

Meetup can sometimes help — but only in specific situations.

Meetup may issue a refund only if:

  • The payment was made using Meetup’s integrated payment processor, Stripe

Meetup cannot intervene or refund payments that were:

  • Made in cash

  • Paid off-platform

  • Processed through another payment provider

If you believe a charge is fraudulent, unauthorized, or a misuse of the payment system, please contact Meetup’s Trust & Safety team.

They may:

  • Issue a refund (if eligible), or

  • Contact the organizer on your behalf and attempt to facilitate a refund

For more specific information on when Meetup may help you obtain a refund from an organizer, please refer to our Terms of Service and our Payments Policies.
