Step down as organizer of a group

👉 Stepping down or closing a group does not automatically cancel your organizer subscription and stop the related billing.
To prevent your subscription from automatically renewing if you don't want to be a Meetup organizer anymore, you’ll need to follow the steps listed in the article Canceling a recurring subscription.

If you decide to step down as the primary organizer of your group, you can invite a member of the leadership team or a member of the group to step up as an organizer. If you're nominating a member to become your group's new organizer, we recommend contacting them in advance and sharing the instructions to step up.

To step down as an organizer, you must log in from a desktop or mobile web browser.

How to step down as an organizer and transfer group ownership

  1. Navigate to your group's home page.
  2. Hit Manage group.
  3. Select Transfer group ownership from the drop-down menu.

You have two options for finding a new organizer for your group:

  • Nominate a member of the group to become the new organizer
  • Step down without a nomination

Nominating a new organizer

  1. In the search box, find the organizer you want to nominate (they must be a member of the group) and check the box beside their name. Then hit Next.

  2. Add a custom message for the potential incoming organizer (this is particularly helpful if you haven't spoken with the organizer you are nominating).

  3. Select Ask selected members.

If the member declines your nomination, you can nominate a new organizer using the same process.

❗️If you don't find the member you're looking for in the list of potential new organizers to nominate when transferring your group, it's very likely that they have been inactive on the group for more than 54 weeks. The filters currently in place exclude inactive members from being nominated as new organizers for a group, to prevent the risk that a group gets shut down.

If you want to nominate someone who hasn't been active in a long time, we suggest reaching out to them to ask them to visit your group or to change the person to nominate as a new organizer.

Stepping down without nominating anyone

If you decide not to nominate a member, we’ll notify your leadership team giving them the first opportunity to step up as the organizer. If you don’t have a leadership team or if nobody from your leadership team steps up, we’ll extend the invitation to all group members for thirty days.

  1. De-select any members that are selected.

  2. Select Skip and choose a reason on the following page.

  3. Select Next, and then Continue.

  4. Choose Yes, I want to step down.

If no one steps up to take over the group after thirty days, the group will be closed. Learn more about what happens when you close a Meetup group.

Stop being billed

Stepping down does not cancel your organizer plan. Charges will keep occurring depending on your current organizer plan:

  • Standard Organizers pay a fixed fee to organize up to 3 groups within the same subscription. For this reason, stepping down from one of the groups you organize will not affect your bill.

  • Pro Organizers pay a per-group fee. Hence, if you renounce to one of them, your bill will be lower since you won't be paying for that group anymore and you'll only be billed for any other group you keep organizing.

In both cases, to avoid charges entirely, you must cancel your subscription. Follow the steps in the Canceling a recurring subscription help article to stop being an organizer altogether.
