Stepping up as new Organizer of a Meetup group

👉 Meetup+ is not an organizer plan and does not include organizer privileges like managing groups or events. To get organizer access, you need an Organizer subscription, which starts when you create a group.

If the organizer of a group steps down, they can nominate a member to take their place. If no one is nominated, any member of the group can step in and become the new organizer.

There is a limited time to keep a group active once it becomes organizerless. Eligible members can step up and keep the group active by becoming the new organizer, provided the group remains open on Meetup. If no one steps up, the organizerless group will be closed after 30 days. Once a group is closed, it cannot be taken over by a new organizer.

If you decide to become an organizer, you'll need to start a subscription if you don't already have one. You'll be able to start a subscription when you go through the process of stepping up as an organizer.

Every organizer needs their own organizer subscription. Subscriptions are tied to accounts, not to groups, and don't transfer with group ownership. To take over a group, the receiving account must start a new organizer subscription (Standard or Pro).

❗️Please note that the Starter Organizer plan is only available to brand‑new groups and new organizers. Existing groups can't be transferred to organizers on a Starter subscription.

Accepting a nomination

If you’ve been nominated as an organizer, you’ll receive a notification directing you to the group’s homepage.

To accept a nomination to step up:

  1. Navigate to the group's homepage.
  2. Under “Organizers,” select Accept.
  3. Follow the prompts to start your own organizer subscription plan.

👉 If you accidentally accept a nomination for a group you don’t want to lead, don’t worry—if you're a Standard organizer, you can step down right away by following the steps listed in the article Stepping down as the organizer of a group.

If you're a Pro organizer, feel free to reach out to Meetup Support—we’ll be happy to help you step down from your group.

Stepping up without a nomination

If an organizer steps down without nominating someone, members will be invited to step up and take over as the new organizer of the now organizerless group.
