Changing a group's URL

You can customize your group's URL so members can easily identify your group. You can make your URL a combination of words, as long as the URL isn't already taken.

Note: At this time, group URLs can only be changed using a desktop or laptop computer.

To change your Meetup group's web address:

  1. From your Meetup group's homepage, select Manage group.

  2. Select Edit group settings.

  3. Click on Basic Information.

  4. Scroll to the "Where" section.

  5. Enter your proposed URL in the field.

  6. Scroll down and click Save.

If you receive a message saying your changes weren’t saved while trying to update your group’s URL, it usually means the URL you've chosen is already linked to another Meetup group. Custom URLs are unique and, once they've been used—even by a group that has since been closed—they can no longer be used again. If that happens, we recommend choosing a slightly different variation that still represents your group clearly and memorably.

Guidelines for creating a URL

  • Only use letters, numbers, and dashes (no punctuation or special characters).

  • Keep your web address between 6-70 characters.

  • Make your URL specific to your group (purpose and location).

  • Don't create one-word URLs (e.g., tech).

  • Put dashes between words instead of combining them all into one word; this will help search engines find it.

Reusing a deleted group URL

Group URLs are unique and cannot be reused, even if the original group was deleted shortly after creation. This is why you may see a message that the URL is already taken. We do not release or reassign previously used URLs.

We recommend choosing a new, unique URL for your group. To find an available option:

  • Add identifiers like your location or keywords that reflect your group’s focus.

  • Try slight variations of your group name.

  • Keep it simple and easy to remember.

  • Once you’ve chosen an alternative, update it in your group’s settings.
