Joining a group with member dues

Some groups require members to pay dues. Organizers may use their members’ dues to offset costs associated with leading a group.

Most groups have Join this group button on the homepage. Click this button to join the group.

A pop-up will show the dues cost, how often it will be collected, and the number of trial days before you'll be charged. Click Start trial to proceed.

When will I be charged?

Organizers can set a trial period for members to attend events before paying dues.

Meetup automatically sends an email update three days before your trial expires, reminding you to enter your credit card information. You can enter your payment details at any time during your trial. You’ll be charged at the end of your trial period.

It is not possible to pay dues before your trial ends.

Review the status of your dues payments at any time on your account’s Payments Made page.

What happens if I don't pay my dues?

Members who don’t provide payment details or whose payments fail are automatically removed from the group.

If you’d like to rejoin, follow the steps outlined in this article.

Why was I charged monthly/quarterly instead of annually for my member dues?

If you were charged monthly, quarterly, or another amount that doesn’t match what you see listed in the group’s current dues description, you may still be on an older dues plan.

Here's why this might happen:

  • The organizer recently updated the dues frequency (for example, from monthly to annual or from quarterly to annual).

  • However, changes to dues frequency usually apply only to new members going forward.

  • As an existing member, your billing remains on the previous (monthly) schedule, unless the organizer specifically updated it for you.

  • If you joined before that change, your billing will remain on the original schedule, such as monthly or quarterly, unless the organizer decides to update it for existing members as well.

This is expected behavior in Meetup’s system and does not indicate a billing error.
