Meetup’s API does not currently strict, automatic rate limits on requests. This means your integration won’t be blocked simply for sending a high number of calls within a specific timeframe.
However, there are important guidelines and expectations for high-volume usage, as Meetup still oversees and monitors expected usage patterns.
How Meetup monitors API usage
Although there are no automatic rate caps, Meetup continuously monitors API traffic to ensure platform stability for all users.
If we detect unusually heavy or inefficient usage, we may:
Reach out to you or your development team
Recommend optimizations
Request adjustments to prevent service disruptions
Work with you to understand how the API is being used
This proactive monitoring helps keep the API reliable for everyone. High volumes aren’t necessarily discouraged, but they must be planned and supported to avoid performance issues.
High-volume usage should be discussed during approval
If you’re planning an integration that will generate significant traffic, we ask that you share the following upon requesting OAuth access:
Estimated request volumes
How frequently your system will make calls
Which API operations you’ll rely on most
Any batch processes or automated syncs you expect to run
This information allows the Meetup team to:
Ensure your use case is compatible with system performance
Prepare appropriate monitoring
Provide best-practice guidance
Flag any risks early
Coordinate with engineering if needed
Our goal is to support your integration while keeping the platform stable.
Need help planning a high-volume integration?
If you’re unsure whether your expected usage counts as high volume—or if you’d like performance guidance—our Support team is happy to help. Share your use case, expected traffic, and technical goals, and we’ll assist you in planning the best approach.
