How Meetup notifications work

Meetup can notify you by email, push notifications, and your account inbox messages.

This article outlines:

  • How Meetup notifications are controlled

  • How to turn them on or off

  • What to check if you or your members didn’t get a notification

Notification settings overview

Notifications depend on two kinds of settings:

  • Global setting: This applies to your whole account and acts as the master on/off switch for all email updates or push notifications. If this is off, you won’t receive any Meetup emails at all (except essential account, privacy, or payment information).

  • Account-level updates (outside groups): These apply to your entire account and control individual types of Meetup updates that aren’t tied to a specific group — for example, messages, replies, or news from Meetup HQ. Each can be toggled on or off separately under Account settings → Email Updates.

  • Group settings: These apply to each group you belong to and control which topics that specific group can contact you about (for example, event announcements, reminders, or organizer messages).

You’ll only receive a notification when the relevant type is turned on in your account and, for group-based updates, the group setting is also enabled.

Turning off all email updates on the web

If you want to stop Meetup email updates completely:

  1. Go to your Account settings → Email Updates

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page

  3. Click Turn off all email updates

This stops all email updates about new messages from other members, replies, comments, etc. However, we'll still email you important information about your account, security and privacy, payments, and policies.

This is the global master switch and affects every group and setting across your account.

Turning off notifications on your phone

To stop getting Meetup phone notifications:

  • Open the Meetup app on your device

  • Go to Settings → Push Notifications/Email updates

  • Toggle them off

You can also turn off Meetup notifications directly in your phone’s system settings (iOS or Android).

💡 Inbox messages can’t be turned off.
These appear inside your Meetup account when there’s new activity you’re involved in.

How global and group settings work together

You’ll only receive a notification if:

  • You’ve allowed that type globally (email or push), and

  • You’ve allowed that topic in your group’s notification settings.

Example:

  • If you turn off all email updates globally, you won’t get any event or message emails — even if those options are turned on in your group.

  • If you keep the global email on but turn off Event announcements for one group, you’ll still get event emails from other groups where it’s enabled.

  • If you keep the global email on but turn off Replies to my comments, you won't receive these communications, but you'll still receive notifications about new messages if the toggle for them is enabled.

About duplicates and timing

  • To avoid sending the same update twice, Meetup may skip an email if you have already received a push notification for the same activity. If you prefer both, turn on Also email me about this in your email settings.

  • Some notifications are batched or rolled up to reduce notification noise — meaning you won’t get a separate message for every small action. Instead, Meetup combines similar updates into a single message when possible. You’ll still get all the important information, just grouped together.

  • Most emails are sent within 15 minutes, while some less urgent notifications (like new group members or new event photos) may appear up to 24 hours later.
